FAQs

WHY BOOK A TOUR WITH NORMANDY INSIGHT?

We have over twenty years experience in historical tourism.

Our tours are all based on thorough research into the subject and are continually being updated as new evidence emerges.

We strive to provide you with an insight into the events 1944, and the experiences of individuals, be they soldiers or civilians.

WHY DON’T YOU PROVIDE TRANSPORT?

For many years I worked as a driver/guide, and found it less than satisfactory, for two main reasons. Concentrating on driving meant not concentrating on guiding. With either you, the client, or a hired chauffeur driving, I can direct you and talk without the fear of losing concentration. À chacun son métier
Also, there are laws regarding the transport of paying passengers, and agents to enforce those laws. A legitimate contrôle by these agents can disrupt a tour.

If you don’t fancy driving in France, we will provide you with suggestions for transport.

WHO WILL BE ON TOUR WITH US?

As all our tours are private tours, whoever you wish.

WHO WILL BE OUR GUIDE?

All our tours are guided by me, Sean. The short biography here gives a little background.

HOW DO WE PAY?

Either cash on the day, or in advance with Paypal, whichever is most convenient for you.

CAN WE PAY CASH WITH CURRENCY OTHER THAN EUROS?

Sorry, no. Partly to limit charges but also because of regular fluctuations in currency exchange rates. Visit here to verify the cost in another currency.

WHY AREN’T THE PRICES LISTED ON THE WEBSITE?

Because each tour is different, each tour is priced individually and therefore more efficiently. This can take into account distance, length of tour and/or other issues such as next of kin.

DO WE NEED TO READ UP ON OUR HISTORY BEFORE THE TOUR?

It’s up to you. We aim to cater for all levels of knowledge or interest. If you really feel you need some backgound, you could do a lot worse than watch the old black and white film “The Longest Day”, based on the book of the same name by Cornelius Ryan. If you like reading, then check our recommended reading list.

WHERE CAN YOU MEET US?

Anywhere within an hour or so drive of St Lô. This includes Caen, Bayeux, Cherbourg, Carentan…. If in any doubt, email us.

WHAT’S THE WEATHER LIKE IN NORMANDY?

It varies. It can be sunny in November, raining in August and it’s possible to have three seasons in one day. Almost. Normandy is very green, for a very good reason. Hope for the best but prepare for the worst….

WHAT WILL WE NEED TO WEAR/BRING?

Sensible clothing and sensible footwear. There can be a fair bit of walking, not all of it on proper footpaths. Common sense is the order of the day.

WHAT ABOUT LUNCH?

We normally stop for about a half-hour or so for lunch. You can stop longer if you like but the more time spent eating the less time spent visiting the sites. Normandy has some great food and some great places to eat, in the evening. The cost of lunch is not included.

WHAT IF WE HAVE MOBILITY ISSUES?

Just get in touch and we will do our best to make suitable arrangements for the tour

WHAT IF WE DON’T HEAR BACK FROM YOU?

We aim to respond to all enquiries within 24 hours. Please take into account time zones whilst waiting for a reply. If you haven’t heard from us within 24 hours of your initial request, please send a PM on our Facebook page.

WHAT IF THE TOUR CAN’T GO AHEAD?

Sometimes things happen beyond one’s control. If the tour is cancelled by me any time between receipt of payment and the day of the tour, a full refund of all funds paid will be given. This is highly unlikely, but of course one never knows.
If you, the client, cancel, anytime between receipt of payment and fourteen days before the tour, a full refund of all funds paid will be given. After that time, any deposit paid, up to and including 25% of the total tour price, will be retained. If no deposit has been paid, a Paypal invoice will be sent for 25% of the cost of the tour booked.

WHAT IF YOU’RE ALREADY BOOKED?

We genuinely aim to respond to every enquiry. If the date(s) you require are not available, we’ll provide you with a few suggestions for other guides.
